Educational Background

Prior to his move to the United Kingdom, Anthony Joshua was first schooled in Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria. At that time, he was a student of Mayflower School Ikenne. 

Having separated from her husband, Anthony Joshua’s mother relocated along with her son (Joshua) to the United Kingdom where Joshua was further schooled at Kings Langley Secondary School. At the time of moving to the UK with his mother, Joshua was a 12-years-old. Growing up in Hertfordshire, Joshua proved his athletic capability by breaking the Year 9 100m record in his UK school.

As a child, Anthony Joshua already demonstrated remarkable athletic capability. This capability was evident in how he broke the Year 9 100m record in his UK school. He was just 18-years-old when he kick-started his boxing career and he happened to have been egged on by his cousin to start a career in boxing.

Joshua showed early signs of a successful career upon starting boxing in 2007. He emerged winner at the Haringey Box Cup in 2009 and 2010. He also emerged winner after the eighteenth bout of 2010 ABA Championships. It was in that same year that Joshua defeated Amin Isa and emerged as the British Amateur Champion at the GB Championships. Remarkably, he would emerge as the winner of the ABA Championships for a second time in 2011. 

Following his ABA Championships triumph in 2010, Joshua was wooed with a £50,000 offer which would make him a professional boxer. Joshua rejected the offer and disclosed his reason for rejection as the focus on winning medals rather than making money.

In that year, he was said to have struck an impressive amateur record of 40-3, hence earning him the title “Amateur Boxer of the Year”. Joshua featured at 2011 World Championships where he claimed victory over Roberto Cammarelle who was the Italian reigning champion at the time. He eventually went home with a silver medal following his loss to Magomedrasul. Prior to the defeat by Magomedrasul who cracked out a 1-point victory over him, Joshua tackled Eric Pfeifer.
